print week 580

Posted on October 15, 2015

Chris is the first recipient of the Kathy Woodward Award for Learning. He’s 32 and has been in print for 14 years, progressing from a time-served printing apprentice to his current role

He’s married with “two brilliant boys”, Benjamin (two) and James (four months). His hobbies include running, “the ideal way to get some fresh air and think things through after work”. He also likes watching rugby, football and of course catching up with friends over a beer.

What is your nickname?
Friends call me Pinhead, it originates from PE lessons at senior school. The teacher had taught my older sister and he didn’t like to shout out our long surname, so shortened it and it has stuck with me for over 20 years

How did you get into printing?
I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do but a friend was one year into his apprenticeship at ET Heron. He had explained what the job entailed, hours and pay, it sounded ideal. One of my best friends and I applied for the two positions and both got them, it was a really fun way to learn a trade

What would be your dream job?
Somewhere in the Caribbean running a little family water sports business

What would you most like to print?
Anything that presents a challenge, quality and time sensitive combined

Who do you admire most in the industry?
I admire people that have faced tough times and come through the other side and are better for it

What is your favourite saying?
There are two types of people, those who want to earn a wage and those that feel they are owed a wage. There is nothing wrong with either, it is just learning how to manage both

What is your favourite album?
Anything by the Stereophonics

What is your favourite book?
There are two by Stephen Leather: The Long Shot and Double Tap. I’m currently reading about Taylorism, in The Principles of Scientific Management, which is exciting as it sounds!

What is your greatest luxury in life?
Easy, family. Close or extended, always good to be with or around

What is your greatest ambition?
Job security, and eventually to achieve director level

Most embarrassing moment?
Delivering a best-man speech and the bride was a primary school teacher, the joke was meant to be that she could improve the groom’s motor skills however I was nervous and I said motor boat skills. The room erupted with laughter and I wanted the ground to open up. Worst of all it was caught on film and the couple like to suggest I relive the moment by watching the DVD

Where would you like to be now?
Nice weather, on a beach, with family

What’s your worst fashion disaster?
They occur all the time: i’m either feeling under-dressed or over-dressed for an occasion

Who would be your favourite party guests?
Tom Hanks, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, Dick Winters, Martin Johnson and Johnny Wilkinson

What is the worst kind of print?
A reprint due to a fault or complaint

How would you like to be remembered?
Serious, compassionate, committed and professional when required. Able to enjoy the good times

Life is ….?
Can be difficult but it makes you appreciate what you have and what it took you to get there
